So You Want to Learn to Fly Fish in Maine

Katahdin Woods and Waters Turns 10

The flagship festival returns to Portland, Maine, and tours across the state, bringing adventure film and fellowship to communities throughout the Dirigo State.
A Brief History
In 2012, the event began humbly in the river town of West Forks, a stone’s throw from the confluence of the Dead and Kennebec Rivers. The town’s gathering grounds, “The Ballfield,” hosted an evening of films, bonfires, and flowing local libations. The film program featured local storytellers with a bent toward the river runners that frequent this northwestern Maine town.
Now, 14 years later, The Maine Outdoor Film Festival (MOFF) is a year-round celebration of outdoor cinema. The summer and fall mark its busiest season.

The Flagship Festival
Dates: July 21-26, 2026
That flagship festival is now hosted in Portland and blends films, panel discussions, storytelling, and artistic events. MOFF’s playbook typically includes taking over a field or an open space outdoors, firing up a 20-foot projection screen and audio system, and setting up ample blankets and lawn chairs. Add in the gentle warmth of a Maine summer night and you get echoes its origins back in West Forks.
The Selects Tour
Taking to the open road, MOFF creates unique programs, a collection of films based on a theme, for each location it visits. The organizers’ dedication to matching each Maine community’s identity isn’t a task they take lightly, poring over hours of films looking for messages, themes, and stories that resonate. That way, the stories they show in Bethel won’t be the same as those in Camden or Houlton.
This tour takes place through the late summer and fall following the flagship festival.
The Films
MOFF balances a global perspective with local talent exceptionally well. Maine is gifted with stories and storytellers, which is why MOFF is rooted here, but the reach goes well beyond 207. Films from international expeditions, global missions, and conservation stories spanning continents all grace the screen during the festival. A subtle reminder that we exist in a greater ecosystem than ourselves and our immediate community.
You can find tales of climbers, skiers, conservationists, painters, artists, musicians, hikers, and more. However you like to get outside, MOFF has a film for you.
